Continental is a very large, well respected German tire manufacturer. Their tires are original equipment on many high end European cars. Since Continental owns General, we have combined them here. Continental and General are brands that we don't stock or sell a lot of, but they do have a few tires we really like. Continental was nice enough to send the boss (and others) to their Uvalde Texas proving grounds to test drive their tires. Much of what we report below comes from those actual tests.

General Altimax RT and HP:

The Altimax RT is an all season tire that we often recommend to customers who live in, or go to the snow, but don't want a full snow tire. The tread on these is a little more open which helps disperse the snow, and the "radial" orientation of the tread (from middle to outside) will make them grip better than most all-season tires. However, the main reason most people don't want snow tires is that they are usually only rated around 35,000 miles, whereas these have a 70,000 mile warranty. The Altimax HP is a higher performance version of the RT. It comes in H rated, which has a 55,000 mile warranty and V rated which has a 40,000 mile warranty. Most of our customers who've had these have really liked them.

General G-Max AS-03:

The GMax is General's brand new all season high performance tire. Though it is not among the very highest performance tires, it is still a true performance tire and is very well priced. This was the tire General was promoting in Texas, so the boss got to drive on them. They were definitely better than the tires they were compared with. They had very good traction in wet and dry, and were quiet. They also carry a 40,000 mile warranty which is also better than most high performance tires.

Continental Extreme Contact DW and DWS:

As opposed to the G-Max which is a high performance tire, the Extreme Contact tires are ultra-high performance. These should compare with some of the top tires made. The DWS is a high performance tire made for wet weather driving. The boss got to drive the DWS on a wet track and said they were amazing. The DW is more of a pure motorsports tire and even though it's probably still good in the rain, it's not really optimized for winter driving. Both of these tires gotten have received very good reviews by both the media and consumers.

General Grabber HTS and Continental CrossContact:

The General Grabber HTS is General's newer all season truck tire. We've had a number of customers ask for this tire because they were very highly rated by one of the consumer mags, and were reportedly good in the snow. Those who've purchased them have also been pretty happy with them. However it is important to note that they were only being compared with other all season truck tires. Though they should be good in the snow compared to other similar tires, most good all terrain tires should be better in snow. These carry a 60,000 mile warranty and will be quiet on the road and good in the rain. The tread design on this tire has been carefully engineered for this. The two circumferential ribs on the inside of the outer tread blocks are specifically designed to reduce noise and improve braking and acceleration. The Continental Cross Contact, (which was actually not available when this was written) is the next evolution of the HTS, and should be a little better all the way around. The boss tested this tire in wet braking and the tire it was tested against (a very high end tire) was scary in comparison, while this tire felt totally stable. We'll get the picture posted when it becomes available.

General Grabber AT2:

The AT2 is General's All Terrain tire. In contrast to the HTS which is really more of a road tread, the AT2 should be good in dirt and snow, but still should be good on the rain and quiet on the road. It also carries a 60,000 mile warranty, which is as high as any all-terrain. This is another tire the boss tested in Texas and they were very impressive. They crawled up a rock hill, and went through sand and other obstacles with no problems. It is also one of several new generation all terrain tires which has the tread orientation circumferentially instead of radially. (around the tire as opposed to across the tire) This may be why they worked well in the sand, but we couldn't say for sure.

Grabber FR:

This is General's latest greatest off-road tire. This tire has the tread blocks arranged both radially and circumferentially. (Notice the tread blocks form clear angled lines across the tread, and another set of lines along the length of the tread.) This makes the tire amazingly good off road, and should also give it relatively good road manners and wear. This tire also has a 3 ply sidewall for greater resistance to punctures when off road. A number of off-road racing teams use this exact tire on their race vehicles. - And they have a cool sidewall!
